Mark Phelan
Auto Critic
Mark Phelan is auto critic and columnist for the Detroit Free Press. He began covering the auto industry in 1986, working for legendary automotive journalist David C. Smith at Ward's Communications in Detroit.
At Ward’s, he specialized in reporting on new technology before moving to Europe to help establish the company’s international presence. In addition to living and working in Europe for two years, he has reported on the auto industry from Asia, Australia, South America and Africa.
Phelan has contributed to numerous publications, including the New York Times, Road & Track, and the Car Connection. He is a regular guest on television and radio programs discussing trends shaping the auto industry.
The son of an engineer, he has an affection for robust technology and clean design. He travels extensively for pleasure, frequently to music festivals. This led to knowledge of New Orleans that came in handy when he participated in the Free Press’ coverage of the aftermath of and recovery from Hurricane Katrina.
Phelan studied journalism at Michigan State University. The winner of several awards, he is a juror for North American Car and Truck of the Year and former president of the Automotive Press Association in Detroit.
Phelan was born in Thomasville, Georgia, to Irish parents.
