Bill Laytner
Reporter
From horse and buggy (almost!) to the internet, Bill Laytner has been at the Detroit Free Press for more than four decades, with the exception of two years off during the historic newspaper strike of 1995-97. Upon returning, Bill lost his cherished feature-writing spot and was assigned to be "cub reporter" in Royal Oak, covering Oakland County communities. He has been at that almost ever since, although his suburban coverage was interrupted by a three-year stint at reporting after dark on breaking news across metro Detroit. Prior to the strike, Bill was a feature writer with two weekly columns running simultaneously: "Commuting" and "Health & Fitness." Early on, Bill was the Free Press consumer writer and -- before that -- editor of the old Action Line column of readers' questions and answers.
