Julie Hinds is the pop culture critic for the Detroit Free Press covering TV, movies, books and current events with a cultural impact. Her feature stories, reviews and previews, essays and short items have a special interest in performers and creators with Michigan ties and include everything from interviews with Detroit-born actors David Alan Grier and Lily Tomlin and Ann Arbor-raised documentary filmmaker Ken Burns to the 50 top movies with Michigan ties. She is the recipient of several Society of Professional Journalists Detroit branch first prize awards for best criticism. Previously, she was a feature writer and fashion critic for the Detroit News and San Francisco Examiner and a film critic for the San Jose Mercury News.
