Tim Walz is Kamala Harris' pick for Vice President: Free Press readers weigh in

Detroit Free Press

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris picked her running mate on Tuesday: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. We asked Freep readers to weigh in.

'A fine vice president'

If we are ever to find the road back to sanity in our politics, Tim Walz will be leading the way. Read about any of his accomplishments. They may seem "liberal" to some, but Walz makes it clear that this is the correct way to treat people.

As a teacher, as a football coach and as a governor, he uses Midwestern common sense approach to middle class problems without playing into divisive politics. He cuts to the chase about American values and realizes the growth potential in diversity.

Yes, he was the first to comment about (Republican presidential nominee) Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, as being weird, and it stuck. That only solidified his solid Midwestern man sensibilities of calling it like it is.

He will make a fine vice president.

Tim Walz to campaign in Detroitwith Kamala Harris: What to know about Minnesota governor

Good values, cares about people

I have a sense of relief that this was the decision.

If you look at the constant struggle for societal progress, this, in a tiny way feels like a positive step forward, when we live in a world that feels negative so often. I'll never fully support a person blindly, but I feel comfortable in trusting that Walz is a decent, normal (relative to politicians) human with the interests of helping common people and the kids of common people actually in his core.

I have no clue how much a vice president actually tangibly does, but it at least feels like Democrats chose someone who shares interests of common people and has good human values.

'They won't back down'

Vice President Kamala Harris made an excellent decision in Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. Together, they will govern effectively, inclusively, and boldly for the American people.

They won't back down under tight odds, either — from healthcare to school lunch.

Let's do this.
