Dearborn-based Carhartt named No. 1 outdoor apparel retailer in US by Newsweek

Carhartt, the Dearborn-based clothing company, has overtaken some well-known brands in a Newsweek ranking of America's best outdoor apparel retailers.

The 2024 survey ranks dozens of retailers across different sub-categories like best department store, best jewelry and best toy store.

What is America's favorite outdoor apparel retailer?

In the best outdoor apparel category, Carhartt was ranked No. 1, after being absent from the list for the past two years. Newsweek started its list of best retailers in 2022. Carhartt, founded in Detroit in 1889, is a family-owned business known for its heavy-duty work wear, including jackets, coats, jeans and hunting apparel.

According to its website, the company, which has headquarters in Dearborn, employs 3,000 people worldwide and has 44 company locations in the United States.

How did Newsweek compile the survey?

Newsweek partnered with market research company Statista on the survey.

More than 7,000 shoppers were asked for their opinions on retailers spanning 40 industry categories including outdoor apparel, resulting in a ranking of the 200 best places to make a purchase. Based on responses, retailers were given a score out of 100.

Carhartt was given a score of 89.83.

Rounding out the top 5 were Duluth Trading Company (89.14), L.L.Bean (88.49), The North Face (88.36) and Patagonia (88.26).
