Proposal would allow corrosive materials to cross Ambassador Bridge: Public can weigh in

Michigan residents are invited to give their opinions on a proposal to permit flammable and corrosive materials to cross the Ambassador Bridge.

Hosted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m., the virtual public hearing will begin with a presentation update on the proposal before opening for public comment. Anticipated representation ranges from local businesses to community stakeholders and MDOT staff.

The owners of the Ambassador Bridge asked regulators in November 2023 to allow expanded transport of hazardous materials across the span between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario — specifically, truckloads of flammable liquid or corrosive materials.

The Detroit International Bridge Co. has proposed the following changes: retain existing restrictions for Class 1 (explosives), Division 6.2 (infectious substances), and Class 7 (radioactive materials) from transport over the Ambassador Bridge and allow the transport of Class 3 (flammable liquids) and Class 8 (corrosive substances).

Ambassador Bridge officials predicted an increase in truck traffic of less than 1% if the restrictions were lifted. These changes address public safety while seeking to ensure continuity of movement and not limit or delay the transportation of hazardous materials, according to MDOT.

MDOT, the authorized agency over route designations, conducted a study to evaluate the risks associated with the transportation of hazardous materials on the Ambassador Bridge from Porter Street to Canada and accepted 118 written statements from the public from November through December 2023.
