Brook Taube: “AI is The Key to Understanding Human Consciousness"
Understanding human consciousness has been a puzzle that has perplexed thinkers for thousands of years. Despite technological advancements and an increased understanding of the human mind, this psychological phenomenon continues to baffle scientists and philosophers alike. Now, according to Brook Taube, the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) could be key to further understanding human consciousness.
A Harvard graduate, Brook Taube is known for his work as an investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Often asked to comment on topics as diverse as cryptocurrency regulation, mental health, entrepreneurship, and technology, Taube has recently set his eyes on what he considers to be one of the most promising technologies of our era: AI.
“While we often think of AI as a tool created to make our lives easier, the technology is much more revolutionary than most people think,” says Taube, an active advisor and investor for several startups working on AI-related solutions.
While it has been about 70 years since Alan Turing first mentioned his now-famous “Imitation Game,” the development of AI has only accelerated over the past few decades. Not only did it take AI about 45 years to consistently defeat the world chess champion but it would also take another 25 years for it to be able to generate content in a way that could mirror human creativity. Even now, as AI continues to evolve, it stands in what Taube considers to be its early stages.
“AI is still in its early days. However, it is already disrupting whole industries and transforming the way we approach complex problems,” says Taube, who has previously expressed the need to balance innovation and regulation to make the most out of the technology. “Now that we have made the jump from reactive AI to generative AI, we are ready to embark on efforts like emotional AI and neurotechnology to further delve into the realm of human understanding.”
As mentioned by Taube, the latest developments in generative AI have forced people all over the world to rethink the very concept of creativity. The question of just how creative generative AI models like ChatGPT, Google Bard, or Midjourney really are has sparked discussion across various intellectual circles. Taube recognizes this shift as a fundamental turning point.
“Many people make an argument about AI not being able to truly create anything ‘new’. While this argument could seem valid on the surface, it necessitates a deeper examination," adds Taube. “While these models are indeed drawing from existing data and patterns to produce their outputs, this is also the case for humans who draw inspiration from their surroundings, experiences, and cultural influences. Could generative AI create ideas and content in the same way as us if it had our sensory capabilities? What about access to our emotions?"
Taube’s question is an especially important one at a time when humanity is facing unprecedented challenges. With AI continuously blurring the lines of what it means to be human, it could be just what we need to finally solve one of life’s biggest mysteries: What does it mean to be human?
