Optimal Home Care & Hospice earned the No. 2 ranking among small companies in the 2023 Michigan Top Workplaces competition. But it was another recognition — a 5-Star Patient Experience rating received by Optimal Care in July — that Erik Wilson was most excited to chat about during an October phone call.

Erik Wilson, President and co-owner of Optimal Care.

“Our employees always have to feel like they are contributing to the best patient care, and that is what the rating represents,” said Wilson, president and co-owner of the Bingham Farms-based company, which received the rating based on survey responses provided by patients, as well as family members and friends that are knowledgeable about the home care received by the patient.

Because a shared commitment to patient care is central to Optimal Care’s organizational culture, Wilson says he does not plan to stop talking about the 5-Star ranking anytime soon.

"Our employees always have to feel like they are contributing to the best patient care," says Erik Wilson, president and co-owner of Optimal Care.

“There is a lot of compliance in our business, then we transitioned to new electronic health records, which was huge, and there are so many other extra things that our staff does because they care,” Wilson explained. “So we look for every opportunity to celebrate the great things our team members have done for our organization and their patients.”

Wilson cited town hall meetings and “president lunches,” as occasions when he and other members of Optimal Care’s leadership team have an opportunity to personally thank team members for their valuable contributions.

"We're always coaching and providing tools for our team members to be successful," says Erik Wilson, president and co-owner of Optimal Care.

And along with vigorously celebrating team member successes, Wilson said the Optimal Care culture also heavily promotes learning, which ensures future progress and success for the company.

“We’re always coaching and providing tools for our team members to be successful,” stated Wilson, who began his Optimal Care journey in 2011 as a field nurse. “We wrap our arms around our team and support them, so that they know that we care about them in the same way they care about our patients.”
