Born in Detroit apparel brand extends storefront lease, plans new restaurant at DTW

Born in Detroit, an apparel brand founded by two sets of brothers and a close friend, announced on Monday an extension of its Woodward Avenue storefront lease in downtown Detroit and a new restaurant at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The new restaurant venture, named Born in Detroit Kitchen + Bar will be inside Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal. There was no opening date or menu details revealed for the new restaurant, but the company expects to feature “a curated menu that showcases the city's diverse and vibrant food culture, offering travelers an authentic Detroit dining experience.”

The restaurant will also feature Born in Detroit retail items and is co-branding with the Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co.

In extending its flagship storefront lease, which offers its branded T-shirts, hoodies and hats plus other items, the company said in a news release that it “underscores the brand's commitment to its roots and its dedication to serving the local community with innovative and stylish offerings.”

The lease extension for Born in Detroit’s storefront at 1275 Woodward (corner of Grand River) means it will remain open until December 2025, according to a news release. The store is in the former Moosejaw store and across from the Shinola Hotel.

The Born in Detroit store on Woodward Avenue sells apparel such as t-shirts, hats and hoodies.

"Extending our lease in Detroit allows us to continue being a part of this amazing community, while our new restaurant at Detroit Metro Airport gives us the opportunity to share the flavors of Detroit with a global audience,” Anthony Tomey, co-owner of Born in Detroit said in a statement. “These expansions are a testament to our brand's growth and our unwavering commitment to celebrating and promoting Detroit's unique culture."

With an extended lease, the store will continue to offer its exclusive apparel designs and collections along with its lounge experience. Born in Detroit created the lounge in partnership with Gardner White, Michigan’s furniture retailer where events such as live radio broadcasts, podcast tapings, happy hour and private events take place.

The Born in Detroit store on Woodward Avenue extended its lease until December 2025.

The store is open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

The lifestyle brand known for its “Born in Detroit” apparel line, came about in 2020 by two sets of brothers and a close friend. Anthony Tomey, Michael Tomey, George Bourkoulas, Alex Bourkoulas and Michael Shumaker, all born in Detroit, started the company along with sister company, 8 Mile Vodka.

The Tomey brothers are part of the family-owned Tomey Group, which owns and operates nearly 50 Jimmy John’s locations across southeast Michigan.
