New Japanese-inspired bar with world class whisky opens in lower level of the Book Tower
A Japanese-inspired bar has quietly opened in downtown Detroit featuring nods to world-class, rare whiskies, a striking atmosphere and pays homage to David Bowie.
The Aladdin Sane is a new, hidden spot inspired by traditional Japanese cocktail bars in Tokyo, with bars and tables at the same height. On the lower level in the historic Book Tower on Washington Boulevard, the cocktail bar is from Method Co., the same owners of nearby Hiroki-San.
Aladdin Sane gets its name from legendary late musician David Bowie’s 1973 album. Its bar menu features signature cocktails inspired by album tracks such as "Watch That Man" and "Panic in Detroit."
While Aladdin Sane has a cocktail menu with house creations, including takes on classics, according to a news release, this bar houses a collection of rare whiskies, including the rare Yamazaki 18 100th Anniversary Edition and the only bottle of Glenfiddich 29 Year Grand Yozakura available in a Michigan bar.

On its spirits menu is a vast collection of Japanese whisky, single malt Scotch whisky, rye whisky plus Bourbons, agave, brandy and liqueurs.
Stokes Architecture + Design designed the bar's interior featuring a heavy nod to dark woods, including a single-piece mahogany slab and leather tones, according to a news release, lending upscale aesthetics. This spot is intimate with just nine seats at the bar and 23 lounge seats.
The Aladdin Sane, 1265 Washington Blvd., Detroit, is open 5-11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday. For information thealaddinsane.com.
