Eastbound and westbound Interstate 96 is closed between Milford and Wixom roads due to a live wire downed across all lanes of the freeway Friday morning.

The closure was first reported at 7:10 a.m., after a crane in the construction zone brought the wire down. At 8:56 a.m., the Michigan Department of Transportation confirmed that DTE was on the scene and had deactivated the power line.

Crews are now in the process of clearing the wire, beginning with the westbound lanes, and working to restore power to customers impacted by the down wire. Power is expected to be restored around 11 a.m., and the freeway is expected to be totally open by noon.

Commuters on eastbound I-96 were told to use Grand River Avenue East to get to Wixom Road North, and westbound commuters were told to westbound Grand River Avenue to get to Kent Lake.

This is a developing story.
