Sheetz, a gas station chain, hiring for Michigan store opening in Romulus
Sheetz, a gas station and convenience store chain in six states that is expanding to Michigan, plans to hold two recruiting events next week in Romulus to hire 30 employees to work in a new store set to open later this summer.
The Pennsylvania-based company — which is facing a federal government claim that it has discriminated against minority job applicants — said it is seeking full- and part-time workers, including employees for management roles, in its first Michigan store, which is under construction at 33380 Wick Road in Romulus.
The two events, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 31800 Smith Road, Romulus, include opportunities to find out more about the family-owned company, the career paths it offers and to sit for interviews.
In April, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit in Baltimore against the Altoona, Pennsylvania-based Sheetz and two subsidiary companies, alleging that its hiring practices of "criminal history screening" has led to a "discriminatory impact against Black, Native American and other workers."
The feds, however, said they do not allege Sheetz was motivated by racial animus.
In a statement, Sheetz responded to the lawsuit saying it "does not tolerate discrimination of any kind."
Sheetz employs more than 26,000 employees, has 740-plus stores in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina, and plans to add more retail locations throughout suburban Detroit — and other places in Michigan.
